Consulting income is beautifully simple until the rules arrive: PSI, GST, instalments, super caps. Our contractor clients run on a fixed monthly plan with a set-aside percentage per invoice, quarterly BAS handled, and a planning call in May that actually changes the June outcome — usually through deliberate super contributions and timing rather than anything exotic.
The structure question gets answered with arithmetic. We model sole trader versus company against your actual day rate, contract terms and PSI position, and when a company is justified we set it up properly — and tell you honestly when it isn’t.
The compliance that matters in your industry
PSI, applied properly
If the rules attribute the income to you, retained profits and income splitting are off the table — but super, deductions and timing still work. We structure inside the law and document the results test or unrelated-clients test where you genuinely pass.
Deliberate super strategy
Concessional caps, carry-forward contributions and spouse strategies turn a high-tax year into retirement savings at 15% — but the contribution has to land in the fund before 30 June. It's a standing item in every planning call.
GST and contracting admin
GST registration, invoicing that agencies accept, PAYG instalment management and clean records for the day the client's procurement team audits its contractors.
Questions, answered
Should I contract as a sole trader or through a company?
If PSI rules attribute the income to you personally, a company adds cost and admin without the tax benefits people expect — a sole trader ABN is often the honest answer. A company earns its keep with genuine business income, multiple clients, risk to limit, or profits worth retaining. We price both for your numbers.
What are the PSI rules in one paragraph?
If more than half your income from a contract is a reward for your personal effort or skills, it's personal services income. Unless you pass tests such as the results test or the unrelated-clients test, that income is taxed to you personally regardless of the entity that invoices it, and deductions are limited. The tests are factual — we assess your actual contracts.
How much should I set aside from each invoice?
Typically 30–40% covering income tax, GST and super, but it depends on your marginal rate and whether super is paid from the gross. We give you an exact percentage at onboarding and adjust it after each BAS, so the set-aside account always matches reality.
Can you handle my insurance and licence paperwork for tenders?
We produce the financial side — accountant letters, solvency confirmations, financial statements — usually within two business days through the portal. Brokers handle the insurance certificates; we make sure the numbers in every document agree.
