SMSF audits for accounting firms and administrators

Independent SMSF audits for accounting firms and administrators that have lost — or never had — an in-house auditor. Fixed fee per fund, paperless workflow, turnaround measured in days, Australia-wide.

Auditor independence We do not audit funds or trust accounts for which BRS Advisory prepares the financial records. Our audit services are provided independently, in accordance with APES 110.

The number of approved SMSF auditors keeps falling while the number of funds keeps growing — which is why firms that relied on one in-house or local auditor keep finding themselves stuck at lodgement time. We sell audit capacity to firms and administrators only: $495–$650/fund per fund depending on complexity, on standing panel terms, with turnaround agreed up front.

The workflow is built to cost your team as little time as possible. One engagement letter covers the firm; each fund then needs either a document pack or read-only access to Class or BGL Simple Fund 360. Queries are batched into a single round with workpaper references. Reports, management letters and any auditor contravention reports come back electronically — nothing is posted, nothing needs a meeting.

Because we audit only what others prepare, there is no channel conflict: we do not offer administration to your clients, and our independence policy is documented in every panel agreement. Give your production team our SMSF audit checklist to cut query rounds before they happen.

Questions, answered

Who can use this service?

Accounting firms, SMSF administrators and bookkeeping practices that prepare fund accounts and need an independent, ASIC-approved auditor. We don't take audit engagements directly from trustees whose accountant we'd be bypassing, and we never audit funds BRS Advisory administers.

What does an audit cost?

$495–$650 ex GST per fund for standard funds, fixed in advance. Funds with LRBAs, unlisted investments or contravention history are quoted individually before work starts. Volume panels receive scheduled pricing in the engagement letter.

How fast is turnaround?

Our working standard is five business days from complete records to signed report, agreed in the panel terms. Complex funds and July–October peak volumes are scheduled at booking, so your lodgement program never depends on a guess.

How do we send you fund records?

Either grant read-only access to Class or BGL Simple Fund 360, or upload a document pack per fund to the portal. We publish a fixed request list, and queries come back once, batched with workpaper references — not dripped over weeks.

Will you poach our clients?

No. The audit line is deliberately audit-only — we don't market administration to your clients, correspondence goes through your firm unless the law requires otherwise, and the engagement letter says so in writing. Independence is the product — channel conflict would destroy it.

What happens when you find a contravention?

We discuss it with your team first, report what the SIS Act requires — including an auditor contravention report where the criteria are met — and set out rectification clearly so you can manage the trustee conversation. No surprises lodged behind your back.

Who signs the audit reports?

An ASIC-approved SMSF auditor (SAN [[SAN]]) with professional indemnity cover appropriate to audit work. Approval details appear on every report and engagement letter, and you're welcome to verify the SAN on ASIC's register.

Can you clear a backlog of prior-year audits?

Yes — catch-up audits run at the same fixed fee per fund per year, and we schedule capacity so a multi-year backlog lands inside your lodgement window rather than after it.
