Terms of engagement
Every client signs an engagement letter before work starts; that letter is the contract. This page summarises the standard terms in plain English so there are no surprises inside it.
Scope and fees
We do the work described in your engagement letter — no more, no less — for the fixed fee it states. Work outside scope is quoted in writing before it starts. Published website prices are for standard-complexity work, ex GST; ASIC and other government charges are passed through at cost, GST-free where applicable. Subscriptions are billed monthly by direct debit and either side can end them with 30 days’ notice.
Your side of the bargain
You agree to give us complete and accurate information on time, to verify your identity as the Tax Practitioners Board requires, and to approve and e-sign documents before statutory deadlines. Tax law makes you responsible for the accuracy of your returns even when an agent prepares them — our job is to make that responsibility easy to carry, and to keep records that prove it. You are entitled to expect us to act lawfully, competently and in your interest, and to tell you promptly if anything affects that.
Independence (audit clients)
We do not audit funds or trust accounts for which BRS Advisory prepares the financial records. Our audit services are provided independently, in accordance with APES 110.
Confidentiality and outsourcing
Your information is confidential and handled under our privacy policy. Some processing work may be performed by team members located outside Australia under our supervision. Data is stored in Australia and access is restricted and logged. By engaging us you consent to this arrangement. The full arrangement is described in the outsourcing & data disclosure.
Liability
Liability limited by a scheme approved under Professional Standards Legislation. Our liability is otherwise limited as set out in the engagement letter, and we maintain professional indemnity insurance appropriate to public practice including audit work.
Ending an engagement
Either side may end an engagement in writing. We complete lodgements already authorised, hand over records promptly, and charge only for work done. Documents you provided are always yours; our workpapers remain ours, as professional standards require.
Problems
Tell us first — see the complaints process. It covers escalation inside the firm and the external bodies (the Tax Practitioners Board and CA ANZ) you can go to if we don’t fix it.
